The New Year is here. The Holiday decorations around the neighborhood are spectacular; take a minute to walk or drive around and have a look. Enjoy your neighborhood. This year sees a new Board coming in to work for you, with some new and updated ideas. We have had some interest in continuing the Town Hall Meetings. Many residents want to be involved. We welcome your interest and urge you to join the committees we already have set up, or start one of your own. Just contact the business office for information. Also, in this month’s issue, is the first half of a two part article by our Security Team. Please take the time to read it. If you want to know what they do or why, there it is. Have a wonderful January; be safe and well. ~ Joy C. Fosher |

Do you have any dead or expired Compact Florescent Light Bulbs? I have already had a few. I didn’t know what to do with them. Did you know that there have been some people in the media that have been scaring people about the fact that CFL’s have small trace amounts of mercury? The fact that CFL’s have mercury is true. You should treat them a little different than normal light bulbs. One thing that bloggers and the media seem to forget in their story is that florescent light bulbs the kinds that are long tubes have always had mercury in them too. So treating them with respect and not breaking them is important. Now there is a really easy away to recycle them properly and do something good for the environment. Home Depot is now recycling the lights they sell us. All you have to do is take the bulb to Home Depot and take it to the service desk. They will accept it and take care of the rest. It is also important to recycle even the broken ones but don’t pick them up with your bare hands. Get a soft paper towel and pick up the fragments and put them in a plastic bag and take the bag to Home Depot too. Don’t forget to air out the room to remove any mercury vapor that may linger around. You should only need 5 minutes or so of fresh air. If you want more information on the CFL Recycling Program you can find more on this story here and here ! |

To facilitate a sense of unity and clearer communication within the community, The Meadows is considering providing our residents with an English as a second language class. If you are fluent in both Spanish and English and would be interested in helping to teach this type of class here at The Meadows, we would love to hear from you. We need to find as many volunteers as possible to help teach and take on the responsibility for the class. The Meadows would donate weekly use of the Clubhouse, but would need your help to be able to offer this service. You do not need to be a professional teacher or administrator, just someone who knows both languages and has the desire to help others. If you are interested in working on this worthwhile project please contact the management office at 703-830-4464 or via email at |
